Costco Reading Buddies Reading Program
Empowering Children through Literacy
As part of our commitment to supporting children and education in the communities where we live and work, the Reading Buddies Program provides Costco employees with the opportunity to help PreK through sixth grade students improve their reading skills. Since its inception in 1998, the results from this program have been exceptionally positive, with children across the U.S. and Canada improving a full grade level in many areas.
The program implemented by Costco is a read-along initiative. Each student receives one book to read aloud with a tutor at the beginning of the program and another book at the end of the program, which they can take home. This approach not only aims to enhance students' reading skills but also ensures that they have access to reading materials at home.
Trained Costco Volunteers are paired with students either one-on-one or in small groups to provide reading assistance. These volunteers use the provided materials to facilitate reading sessions. The tutoring sessions occur once a week over 10 sessions, offering consistent support to the students. Additionally, snacks are provided during these sessions to create a pleasant and conducive learning environment.
The overarching goal of the Reading Buddies Program is to foster a love for reading and to cultivate proficient reading skills among young learners, thereby empowering them for future academic success and personal growth.
